When we began looking at birds and trying to decide what birds we were going to have on our farm, one of Bob's ideal birds was the Welsummer. The stateliness of the roos and the beautifully patterned hens, we felt would make a handsome addition. Not to mention that the hens lay a terracotta colored egg that can be compared to the Marans. We have had some free ranging and decided to put them into our breeding program.
This breed was developed around 1920 in the Dutch town of Welsum. They are a lighter bird that does wonderfully free ranging. They adapt well to
confinement as well. If you are looking for an above average layer this breed is for you.
P.S. This bird is so photogenic that the Kellogg's cereal company has had this bird as their mascot.
